More Consumers “Living Outdoors” Combined with Increased Boat Sales Mean More Demand for Marine Fabrics

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, we can finally say that Outdoor Living Imagesummer is officially here this month… and, it’s about time! It’s time to put away all remaining signs of this past winter and spring, and start enjoying some outdoor living for a refreshing change. According to the latest reports and trends, manufacturers in the marine industry, and in all industries that serve outdoor living markets, can look forward to increased business this summer.

Today’s consumers are heading outdoors. One recent report says, “The concept of ‘outdoor living’ is an increasingly popular trend that involves extending your indoor space to the outside… ‘bringing the indoors out.’” Another report on BobVila.com also talks about the outdoor living trend, saying, “Homeowners have always sought to live in harmony with nature. But whereas the trend used to be toward bringing the outdoors in, many today are doing the opposite—situating traditionally ‘indoor’ comforts onto the deck, porch, or patio.” But, it’s not just outdoor living at home that will be popular this summer. Consumers will be heading out on the water – lakes, rivers, oceans and bays – for some outdoor recreation, too.

All marine industry indicators are pointing in a positive direction, Marine Fabrics Imageand saying boating will be big this summer! The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) says a record number of Americans are “getting on the water (89 million in 2013 – the most recent figure available).” Powerboat sales are on the rise. The NMMA reports that sales of outboard, stern drive, and jet boats are expected to increase again this year. This increase applies to new and pre-owned powerboats, personal watercrafts, and sailboats. It’s estimated that more than 955,000 pre-owned boats were sold in the U.S. in 2013, and this year’s sales numbers are expected to top that.

The combination of more consumers “living outdoors” and increased boat sales means that there will be increased demand for marine fabrics. The Bob Vila report, quoted above, continued to say, “Thanks to advances in all-weather materials, furniture and accessories are now available in so many shapes, sizes and styles, you can decorate outdoor living spaces in much the same way that you would any room in the home.”
